As organizations face growing pressure to reduce emissions while controlling costs, fleet decarbonization is an increasingly important business priority. The 2024 Global Electrification Report, developed by the Element-Arval Global Alliance and RMI, explores practical strategies fleet leaders can use to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and build a roadmap toward more sustainable operations.
Fleet decarbonization extends beyond EVs: Organizations can reduce emissions through strategies such as reducing idling, optimizing vehicle and fleet size, sharing vehicles and infrastructure, and deploying zero-emission vehicles.
Fleet electrification is becoming more competitive: Electric vehicles are increasingly competitive with comparable internal combustion engine vehicles, with EAGA data showing favorable EV total cost of ownership in several markets and particularly strong economics for higher-mileage applications.
EVs can deliver significant emissions reductions: Analysis of EAGA fleets found substantial emissions savings from electric vehicles, with reductions of 90% or more in some markets and particularly strong results in regions with cleaner electricity grids.
Data is critical to a successful transition: Telematics can help fleets identify vehicles best suited for electrification, plan charging infrastructure, optimize routes and charging schedules, and continually evaluate vehicle performance and operating costs.
A phased approach can reduce transition risk: The report recommends developing a fleet decarbonization roadmap, assessing EV readiness, using telematics to support the transition, and beginning with smaller-scale EV deployments before expanding across the fleet.
